Mazarrón is located in a wide bay open to the Mediterranean , with 35 km of coastline. It consists of two major urban centers : the port and capital of the municipality , 5 km from the coast. The name of Mazarrón comes from its origin to its rich mineral wealth of mountains of lead, zinc , silver, iron , alum and red ocher . In Phoenician , Punic and Roman times immense mining works were performed , leaving numerous archaeological remains. The Arabs also settled in the area, attracted by the abundance of minerals.

 

After the Christian Reconquest, was formed a place called Casas de los Alumbres of Almazarrón as a result of the mines began to be exploited in the fifteenth century. Its strategic location made it a defensive bastion of the neighboring lands of Lorca and Cartagena, proof giving numerous defensive towers to put a stop to the progress Saracens from Africa . Mazarrón is of great importance in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century , during which iron and argentiferous galena exploited . Having exhausted the wealth of the mines, Mazarrón has managed to develop a major tourist and agricultural industries , while enhancing its intense fishing and seafaring tradition. This activity is evident in the port, with its fishing boats and inshore fish market.

 

The result of its rich history, the streets of Mazarrón contain interesting monuments , highlighting the Old City and Ateneo Cultural , Art Nouveau splendor signs of the century . Behind the church consistory of San Andrés (s. XVI) is , with a beautiful coffered ceiling , and nearby, the Convent of the Immaculate Conception - the patron of the locality- . Outside the town , there are other towers such as the Tower of Old Summit ( s . XVII) in the port, the Torre de los Caballos and the Tower of Santa Isabel in Bolnuevo and the hillock of the windlass, a watchtower circular .

 

Besides the wealth of monuments, the coast of Mazarrón in the shelter of its 300 days of sunshine a year and an average temperature of 20 ° C , offers beautiful spots along its 35 km of coastline. Beachfront Bolnuevo find one of the most peculiar landscapes of the region , where , on white sandstone , wind and water erosion have modeled capricious forms to form what is known as Bolnuevo Erosions . Beaches like Reya , Bahia , or El Castellar and virgin coves such as Cala Amarilla, Crane Beach , Parazuelos , Covaticas , Percheles , etc. They provide ideal for lovers bathing or long walks to the sea conditions.

 

Mazarrón is also the ideal place to enjoy a full range of leisure, nautical activities and active tourism framework . The Mazarrón marina has 200 berths . In its regatta club , competition is combined with courses of learning and development . It is also possible to practice rowing, sea paragliding , skiing and boating . Diving enthusiasts can find many clubs that organize courses at all levels and outputs to look beautiful rocky and spectacular underwater caves and crevices. Rural tourism also has a place in this beautiful area marked by its mining past and maritime tradition . Their interesting protected natural areas such as the Sierra de las Moreras , offers the chance to practice activities in contact with nature in an area of great environmental value.
